Between the Lines: Final

Here is the final piece for Between the Lines. Thanks again to Soul Leavitt and Austin L. Pope for working with me on this project. You can see more of Soul’s work here on her Instagram.

This project allowed me to experiment with rotoscoping and creating masking in unusual ways. Below I have the final edit with no rotoscoping on the footage, and pictures of my nuke scripts for each shot. While I used some of the same techniques shot to shot for the rotoscoping I tried to add something slightly different to all of them. This allowed me to learn more techniques and do more problem solving throughout the project.

Between the Lines: Filming and Initial Edits

For this project I was able to get my friend Soul Leavitt to model and Austin Pope to film. We went out on a sunny morning and filmed at different locations around downtown Savannah. Some of my favorite shots were taken at the top of a parking garage. I currently have 3 different edits I’ve been looking at, each are also set to music. These edits are still pretty flexible and may change to fit the music better but there are certain shots that are in all three and will definitely be used. Below are the three different edits.

I prefer edit 2 and 3 right now. I’m still trying to finalize it a bit more but it may take another edit before I’m set on it. While working on finalizing the edit I’m also starting to test on the shot I know I’m using no matter what edit I go with.

Between the Lines: Conceptualization and Tests

I started designing a personal project recently. The basic idea is using roto and other compositing techniques to make footage look more visually interesting. The plan is to do all of this nuke so it will mostly be 2D art happening around what has been filmed. A lot of the inspiration for this project came from different dance videos that utilize roto work to emphasis movements, here are links to two different examples.

I also know I would have difficulties finding someone that would not only be willing to dance but also willing to choreograph so my plan is to film it like a modeling video similar to this pac sun ad.

In order to get some practice while I wait to film I did some tests on a mix of dancing and modeling videos. These were really quick tests but they helped me get a sense of what techniques I could use and different looks that were or weren’t working.
